將這個檔案轉換為 big5 碼：
# iconv -f utf-8 -t big5 txt-utf8.txt -o txt-big5.txt
以上 -f utf-8 -t big5 txt-utf8.txt，代表將 txt-utf8.txt 這個檔案，從(使用 -f utf-8)轉換到(-t big5)的編碼，而 -o txt-big5.txt，代表輸出(-o)到 txt-big5.txt 這個檔案。

但對於中文，就嫌不夠了。常用的中文字保守估計也有數千個，因此得用兩個位元組來表示文字，2 個位元組共有 16 個位元，最多可以表示 216，亦即 65536 個數，像這種以 2 個位元組編碼的方式稱為『雙位元組編碼系統』( DBCS，Double Byte Code System，也有人稱為『雙位元組字集』，Double Byte Character Set )。
