Earlier this week, I was filming a feature on life on the frontlines of Aleppo, Syria. I was camping out with the men of Noor Den al-Zenke batallion, who man a two-block stretch of back streets that now forms the final line between government troops and opposition forces.

In today's community of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, one in five suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or major depression. Brian Scott Ostrom is one of them. After serving four years as a reconnaissance marine and deploying twice to Iraq, Scott, now 27, returned home to the U.S. with a severe case of PTSD. "The most important part of my life already happened. The most devastating. The chance to come home in a box. Nothing is ever going to compare to what I've done, so I'm struggling to be at peace with that," Scott said. He attributes his PTSD to his second deployment to Iraq, where he served seven months in Fallujah with the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion. "It was the most brutal time of my life," he said. "I didn't realize it because I was living it. It was a part of me." Since his discharge, Scott has struggled with daily life, from finding and keeping employment to maintaining healthy relationships. But most of all, he's struggled to overcome his brutal and haunting memories of Iraq. Nearly five years later, Scott remains conflicted by the war. Though he is proud of his service and cares greatly for his fellow Marines, he still carries guilt for things he did and didn't do fighting a war he no longer believes in.

Modern Japan, the second largest economy in the world, is a land of contradictions. Home to some of the most sophisticated technology and manufacturing, it also has communities whose daily life has changed little in the last five hundred years. It is a land of great beauty, both in the landscape and in its celebrations, festivals, and traditional arts.

Matthieu Mondoloni est journaliste multimédia aux Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace. Avec son collègue Pierre France, il a réalisé un webdocumentaire sur une maraude. Munis d’une caméra, d’un dictaphone, d’un appareil photo et d’un bloc notes, ils ont suivi une équipe de la ville de Strasbourg, de 19h à 2h du matin, à la rencontre des sans-abri. Matthieu et Pierre ont monté deux versions : un premier “collage multimédia” pour les DNA, et une deuxième réalisation, plus aboutie, qu’ils ont présentée au premier prix du webdocumentaire, organisé par RFI et France 24. Leur travail a été récompensé à l’occasion du 21e festival Visa pour l’image de Perpignan. Samuel Bollendorff, président du jury, a voulu encourager les DNA, premier quotidien régional à se lancer dans l’aventure du webdocumentaire. Matthieu répond à trois questions sur cette expérience, qu’il ne demande qu’à renouveler.

Best known for her cultural documentation, Ami Vitale has received recognition from World Press Photos, Photographer of the Year International, The Lucie Awards and the South Asian Journalists Association presented her with the Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding reporting. She has been named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association, and Photo District News recognized her as one of 30 image makers of the future.

His filming is both editorially and visually compelling – especially given the extreme conditions under which he works.
