Hello Denver is a typeface designed by Good Apples design studio for Create Denver 2012. The font is free to use for personal and commercial projects.

On March 16th, Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum hosted a fascinating demonstration of the process of a traditional form of Japanese stencil carving  (katagami) and its use in the technique of resist-dyeing textiles (katazome) at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Center in Harlem.

In a slightly random turn of events Banksy will be releasing a new film called Exit Through The Gift Shop that will be premiering at Sundance this Sunday. The film supposedly is about a man who tried to make a movie about Banksy, but Banksy ends up making a film about him instead. From viewing the trailer it just looks like him and Shep Fairey running around Silver Lake and Melrose bombing buildings. I’m curious to hear what it’s really about, I’m sure it’ll be interesting no matter what it is.

Another of the exciting shows I saw while on my recent trip to NYC was a survey of the textile works of Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984) at Japan Society, a Japanese designer who took his inspiration from the traditional techniques of stencil dyeing. This kimono was stunning in its color harmonies and surprising shapes. There were others just as dramatically beautiful. Some of the most startling designs were on Noren, or entrance curtains, their shapes strong and simple.

This Japanese Koi design was created specifically for this tutorial. (my original drawing in fig. 1.) I wanted to create and instruct with a relatively simple design that translated well into a two stencil work. It is based on traditional Japanese Koi artwork (but I really just made it up, so I hope it’s more recognizable than it is offensive) due to the popularity of the symbol and design in historic and modern tattoos. Of course my bleaching work began when I was asked to “tattoo” fabric. The Koi also symbolizes luck, and I can use all of that I can get.

This political stenciling is on a wall just across the Poitiers main public library. It shows Nicolas Sarkozy, Ségolène Royal and Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Pochoir is a sweet stencil antiqua typeface with round and thick serifs. It was inspired by Paris street art on a university trip, namely stencils of course. The art form of stencils has first appeared in Paris in the 1980s.

The Scrawl Collective Following the success of 1999's book: Scrawl, Dirty Graphics and Strange Characters and 2001's Scrawl Too, More Dirt (Booth Clibborn Editions), the co-author Ric Blackshaw set up The Scrawl Collective, an agency and consultancy dealing with street artists and related illustrators. So far that includes London, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Seville, Bristol, Lyon, Marseille, Brussels.
