Pattern fills - samples.

There are many ways to fill the background of a DOM or SVG element, including using solid colors or gradients. If you want to use a repeating pattern of some kind, the easiest way to do so is to create an SVG document that defines it and use it as a pattern fill. SVG images are typically smaller than bitmap images and remain sharp on high-dpi screens. Unlike CSS3 gradients, SVG images are supported on IE9. (source: http://philbit.com/svgpatterns/#whysvg)

Can You Identify These Cities From Their Light Signatures? - Facts So Romantic - Nautilus

The light that a city emits is like its glowing fingerprint. From the orderly grid of Manhattan, to the sprawling, snaking streets of Milan, to the bright contrast of Kuwait’s ring-roads, each city leaves its own pattern of tiny glowing dots. See if you can ID these cities based on the way they shine.

How the Float Label Pattern Started

I first had the idea for a new input pattern back in August. The idea was simple enough - animate placeholder text to show an icon beside the input so you don't lose your context. I've been doing 99% mobile work for the past 2 years and little things like this can really add up. I wanted a solution that saved space, looked clean and clear, but didn't forego usability.

javascript - How to draw straight lines inside google map polygon - Stack Overflow

I have created a google map using google map javascript API V3. I am drawing number of zipcode polygons. The polygons are of different colors depending upon some condition. Now I want to draw straight lines/ hash marks inside some of the polygons depending upon certain criteria. How can we do it. Below is the code which I have written for drawing the polygons.

Elephants-A Year in a Day

Do elephants have a circadian rhythm? This visualization shows the hourly positions of five bull elephants fitted with GPS collars in Laikipia County, in central Kenya. The visualization illustrates 34,786 GPS positions, which have been compressed into a single 24-hour period to illustrate the general pattern of movement throughout the day, regardless of season or individual.

Because the primary input method of the iPad is a single piece of multitouch glass, developers have incredible flexibility to design unique user interfaces. It’s hard to appreciate the variety of UIs though, since turning the screen off removes virtually all evidence of them. To spotlight these differences, I looked at the only fragments that remain from using an app: fingerprints.

design inspirations from Kyoto: Decoding Kyoto: Patterns #1 - asa-no-ha

The presence of traditional Japanese patterns throughout Kyoto -- from textiles and paper to ceramics and other objects to interior design and architectural details -- aroused my curiosity, and in the komon monyou card set by MONKARUTA I found a lovely resource to learn more about them -- and to practice reading Japanese as well. In addition to the two sets with matching pictures, to play Pairs (Memory) and various other games, there is a third set of cards with a brief explanation of the pattern's usage and meaning.

Spoonflower: Print custom fabric on-demand

by 2 others
Spoonflower makes it possible for individuals to design, print and sell their own fabric designs. It was founded in May 2008 by two Internet geeks who had crafty wives but who knew nothing about textiles. The company came about because Stephen’s wife, Kim, persuaded him that being able to print her own fabric for curtains was a really cool idea. She wasn’t alone. The Spoonflower community now numbers around 70,000 individuals who use their own fabric to make curtains, quilts, clothes, bags, furniture, dolls, pillows, framed artwork, costumes, banners and much, much more. The Spoonflower marketplace offers the largest collection of independent fabric designers in the world. The site has appeared in the New York Times, Associated Press, Vogue, Martha Stewart Weddings, Make, CRAFT, ApartmentTherapy, Photojojo, and many other terrific publications and blogs.

Serizawa at the Japan Society Museum- artnet Magazine

I had the good fortune to tour the comprehensive survey of works by textile master Serizawa Keisuke at the Japan Society, curated with admirable rigor by the society's gallery director Joe Earle, with two formidable blondes, Alexandra Peers of the Wall Street Journal and Alice Judelson of I-20 Gallery. As Peers commented, using an old journalistic term, "They buried the lede," by putting the jewels of the exhibition, Serizawa's incomparable kimonos from the 1960s, in a back room of the gallery, where you might miss them.
