A while back Last.fm released a command line tool to retrieve metadata for an arbitrary mp3 from their new fingerprint database. I tried it yesterday and it seemed way better than MusicBrainz. So, as a person with a lot of random mp3s, I cooked up a script for retagging entire folders of songs.

This application automatically sets the rating for all tracks in your iTunes library according to how often each track is played, and how often each track is skipped. Tracks that are frequently skipped are penalised, while often-played tracks are given a higher rating. This is particularly useful when using the 'Play higher rated songs more often' option with Party Shuffle, or using smart playlists.

The veteran Scrobblers amongst you will probably remember our “moderation system” – this was a user-voting system that let you propose and merge artists, ultimately fixing misspelled artists by creating aliases to the correct version. We are planning to bring this back in a big way, addressing not only artists, but albums and tracks too. We don’t want to have to vote on the really obvious stuff (“01 – Radiohead”), so we are going to do as much as possible automatically, with various algorithms and data mining tricks. The entries we can’t be 100% sure about, and the remaining stuff, will again be thrown open to a public vote. Phase 1 is now underway with the first public “beta” release of our new fingerprinting technology. This will mature into a nice sexy (free) API that lets you grab clean metadata based on an audio fingerprint. For now, all that it does is send the fingerprint data to bootstrap the moderation system. This doesn’t change any MP3 files on your computer. It does send useful fingerprint data to our moderation system so we can get the ball rolling. If you have a big MP3 collection, it will take a while… Thankfully it remembers where it got to, so you don’t have to do it all in one session. Ever heard of Snap Ant? He plays bass and kalimba with Ninja Tune's UK psychedelic masters Super Numeri, with Pop Levi and Karl Webb from Loka (check their discography). If you haven't heard them yet it's still high time! Snap Ant also released a very cool sample-free psychedelic pop album, "This Is Jut!" on Invicta Hi-Fi Records in October 2005 (read my review). He remixed Ladytron and Coldcut. He started a pop band called Maude, with Lynsey Packman and Linus Jackson (download their free online EP). With Super Numeri he released in september 2005 a mind-blowing mix, "The Enochian Way", a crazy mash-up of various psychedelic stuff from all ages, one of the best compilations of 2005 (check the tracklist). When he contacted us with this new 28mn psychedelic mashed-up mix, we were delighted, enthousiastic, jumping around, kinda like kids with a new toy: basically, we're proud to introduce the amazing world of Snap Ant to you today.
